Anna Rea Heritage Auto Tour Shifts Gears:

Delayed, but not Canceled

(June 25, 2020)

In April, the Anna Rea crew made the difficult yet necessary decision to postpone the first three loops of the auto tour due to COVID-19 in hopes that later summer months would be safer for statewide travel and gatherings. After closely monitoring the situation and weighing all options, we believe postponing the tour this year is in the best interest of the crew, participants, and state parks. We are putting the brakes on 2020's remaining planned drives to State Parks and meetups in nearby communities. However, we are committed to getting the show on the road in the future.

Though it is possible to cruise Iowa's Scenic Byways and explore its State Parks while social distancing, we were looking forward to meeting up with antique and vintage car clubs, families, and residents of nearby towns throughout Iowa. Meeting and greeting lots of people that also have a passion for state parks is what this tour is all about. We also anticipate that parks staff, Friend of State Parks group, and nearby local communities will organize events and picnic lunches and dinners to help attract local people to celebrate state parks’ first 100 years and launch enthusiasm for the next 100 years. We want to freely shake hands, let people comfortably walk up to see our vintage automobiles, and have large audiences as we learn about the state parks that we visit. This human element is part of what makes our traveling statewide celebration so special, but the healthy and safety of the crew and fellow Iowans is paramount.

At its heart, the Anna Rea Heritage Auto Tour is a celebration of Iowa's State Parks Centennial. The crew is a small team of four lifelong state park enthusiasts who are volunteering their time to pull off the ultimate summer road trip series to celebrate the first 100 years of Iowa's State Park system. We're disappointed to put the fun on hold, but we're dedicated to making it happen. It's just as important to kick off the next 100 years with positive momentum. The best way to stay connected with Anna Rea the Model A is to follow her on Facebook and Instagram. You can also check out the website for blog posts from the crew.

Remember to check out the brand new book published by the Iowa Parks Foundation, Iowa State Parks: A Century of Stewardship, to enjoy and understand the serene beauty of Iowa's state parks, preserves and state forests, which you can purchase at bookstores throughout Iowa, online at the University of Iowa Press, or other on-line booksellers. Travel Iowa's just released Iowa State Park Passport is also a fun way to learn about and celebrate parks with your family and friends this year.

Heritage Auto Tour Postponed Due to COVID-19

(April 6, 2020)

Anna Rea the Model A is doing her part to flatten the curve. While the car and crew were excited to get going on the Heritage Auto Tour on May 1, 2020, the health and safety of friends, family, and fellow Iowans are of the utmost importance.

It is possible to social distance while driving along the beautiful scenic byways of Iowa, but it would put a damper on plans for town meetups, park gatherings, and dining in restaurants along the way.

With all that in mind, Anna Rea and crew have decided to postpone the first three loops, which were scheduled for May and June. The West Central, South Central, and North East routes will be rescheduled. We will continue to reevaluate all the routes and dates in accordance with state and CDC guidelines.

By the time August 1 rolls around, we hope to be out from under the COVID-19 cloud and ready to hit the open road beneath sunny skies.
